Story Behind Amber's Bed & First Bath at Home-12.22.14

We were home by 4pm yesterday after 26 days in ICU from Amber's back surgery. I thought it would be a piece of cake to finally be home. Boy was I wrong. No more monitors to alert us if she is breathing well. No more nurses to answer questions. No more help caring for her (those leg casts are quite heavy and bulky). And the meds.....well, let's just say I could never be a nurse. After a great deal of time studying the dosage for getting her off the meds, I think I have it figured out. (Yes, they sent instructions, but.....) There is no keeping this stuff in my head. I write everything down! Her last meds from her hospital stay will end the middle of January. We finally received a suction machine late this afternoon. Amber is still gagging and coughing a great deal. The machine is a HUGE much needed piece of equipment. I think I will actually sleep tonight because of it. Last night was rough. Maybe not so much for Amber, but it sure was for me! I can't tell you how many times I checked to see if she was breathing in the last 24 hours. With all that said, I THINK she is doing well.
Thankfully Amber has a wonderful bed. Do you know the story behind it? Many years ago I asked friends, family and anyone who would listen to enter a drawing for this VERY expensive Sleep Safe Bed and we won!!!! A lady my mom works with (I had never met her before), who lives near me, won the bed! She then gave it to us. It does everything a hospital bed does, and then some. Truly a blessing for us right now for sure.
Tonight we will tackle giving her a full bath. We will take the leg casts off and then put them right back on after the bath. I can't wait to have her nice and clean!!
Thanks for continuing to pray for Amber. Her being home makes me realize how frail she still is. Still no smiles from her, but she definitely does not seem to be in pain. Still taking baby steps, but glad to have our girl home with us. We still can hardly believe how blessed we are.
